they also say they should have less of a role in education in america. both of those things are somewhat inconsistent. at the end of the day, we have to have policies that are oabout supporting and nurturing good teaching. having art and music, having a real collaboration. those are the things that can turn around schools or make good schools even better. the federal government, when they do policies about schools, should do things that do not do harm and actually move that kind of agenda. i would like to see us get away from the silver bullet theory that if you put a test score in the teacher's evaluation, that will make things great. that is not what makes things a great. what makes things a great is when we have teachers who are supported, have the time, the trust to do the things they need to do, have the tools to do the things they need to do, and we have kids who have the resources they need, including, if they are hungry and if they cannot see a black boy, they have choices to make sure that happens. host: mark is our next call from california on

just general america. it's true that it's harder today than it was for my generation, but there are some opportunities. but i think bruce -- bruce is a very unique character, a real life force. you can always learn a lot by watching him and listening to him and he is a working guy. when i first met tim -- him he was broke, living in a surfboard factory. and the most impressive thing about him which i've always tried to emulate ever since, but never been able to quite get there, he was completely uncompromising. there was nothing anyone had that he wanted that would make him compromise his art or his position, you know? and he's that guy. so i don't -- i mean i just think that america, like everyone else believes or most people belief, is at a crossroads right now. if you go to other countries, especially asia and other stuff, importing all their students to get educated here and exporting all the brain power out right after that, i think it's a real problem, you know? but there's nhing i can do about that

we, as news people are a reflection of america. america is not a reflection of newspaper. -- news people. the level of self importance that reporters should never have. it bothers me. it is not unusual. we get blamed for certain things, but we are just trying to report what we see. as newspapers and news organizations drift in k, to pander thin to a particular audience, it is because that need exists. america has become more polarized and more separated somehow. it will be interesting to see. i am fascinated by the process in washington right now. we are covering it intensely. if there is one thing that stood out for me in covering the election, it was not so much the two different sides of america. those extremes are way out there. most americans are pretty reasonable. almost all americans are sick and tired of this fighting in washington. they want some kind of agreement to be reached, even to show us they can work together. we look for that as americans in our government. figure it out. figure it out together. all of those thing
